The moving line (动爻, dong yao) is the heart of any hexagram reading — the point where the state changes. Moving lines in football analysis identify the match's pivot: the goal, the red card, the substitution that changes everything.
A hexagram is a snapshot; the moving line is the motion within the snapshot. In match readings, the moving line's position and its six relative reveal the nature of the pivot: an early moving line suggests a decisive opening phase; a late moving line, a dramatic finish.
Each moving line carries one of the six spirits (六神), adding texture:
A hexagram with no moving line is itself information: a controlled, event-light match. The daily report flags these — 'six lines quiet' — so readers know the game is expected to unfold without a dramatic pivot.
